Infection precautions for patients with a prosthesis

Follow these infection precautions to reduce the chance of infection to your joint. These instructions are written for your dentist or physician to follow. An untreated infection elsewhere in your body may spread to your joint replacement. If there are any concerns, contact your primary care provider and obtain an infectious disease consultation as needed.

| Teeth Cleaning, Scaling, Dental Extractions, Root Canal, Bridge Work, Capping | Cleocin 150 Mg tabs. Take 4 tabs one hour prior to the fillings or procedure. Take 2 tabs 6 hours later. Alternatives: Amoxicillin or Erytomycin |
| Skin Boils, Infected Skin Lesions | Cleocin for 1 week minimal or longer until the lesion is healed. Alternative: Dicloxacillin, Keflex, or Erytromycin |
| Podiatary Procedures | Cleocin 150 Mg tabs. Take 4 tabs one hour prior to the procedure. Take 2 tabs 6 hours later. For infections, continue until infection is resolved. Alternative: Dicloxacillin, Keflex, or Erytromycin |
| Genitourinary Tract, Gastrointestinal Tract (pap smears, cone biopsy, cystoscopy, sigmoidoscopy) | Ask your physician to follow the American Heart Association Guidelines. IF infection present, treat with the appropriate antibiotic until the infection is resolved. |
| Breast Biopsy | Ancef introvenous prior to surgery. Alternative: Cancomycin |
| Surgery | Inform the treating physician to follow the American Heart Association guidelines, and we recommend pre-medication. |
| Cardiac Catheritization | Inform the treating physician to follow the American Heart Association guidelines, and we recommend pre-medication. |
